Walk in Power,

Walk in Ease

 with Carol Montgomery
and
Cynthia Allen
A series of live, online courses

Do you want to walk more but always seem to walk less?

Maybe walking is not enjoyable, maybe even uncomfortable, or painful?

Are you searching for a way to improve your current level of wellness, activity, or overall function?

How You Walk Is Just As Important As Where You Are Going
Walking is a function of the nervous system’s ability to align and organize the significant components of the body: the head over the pelvis and the pelvis over the feet. The Walk in Power – Walk in Ease series will take you on a journey to understand how your brain’s power and neuroplasticity can improve your gait’s effectiveness and efficiency.

Throughout the three modules of Walk in Power - Walk in Ease, we increase our potential to better care for ourselves as we age and discover more possibilities throughout our lifespan. We begin to change what we thought we could never change. We begin to move in ways we thought we could never move again. We begin to feel the joy that arises within free, spontaneous movement. We begin to walk in power and ease.

Become aware of how the pattern of movements between your head, torso, and limbs — your gait —shapes your physical comfort, security, and emotional well-being.

"This course continued to reinforce my belief that I have more functionality in my body than I am currently using -- and it showed me some doable techniques I can use to organize myself more effectively.  So awesome, so good -- I got my money's worth after Day 1.'

~ Lisa McKinley ~

Each module is 10 hours spread out over 5 days with 2 hours each day.  You will experience nearly immediate improvement in somatic movement explorations along with insightful lectures.

MODULE 1
Unlock, Open and Connect the Ankle—Knee—Hip Pathway

Is your walking layered on top of dysfunctional movement or pain, magnifying rather than resolving problems or advancing your health? In this module, you will discover how the 'gates of mobility and stability' within your gait unlock a pathway from your foot to the pelvis to deepen your understanding of how an organized single-leg stance during movement successfully carries over into more challenging tasks that require a smaller base of support, like walking, turning, reaching, and climbing as well as, the potential to improve your overall well-being.

Reconnecting a person to their natural capacity for feeling, thought, and action, this module restores better alignment within the ankle, knee, and hip joints inviting movement coordination and the collaborative functions of the skeletal, muscular, and nervous systems.

MODULE 2
Heal and Restore a Powerful and Fluid Torso
Some aspects of walking can only be discovered when you explore your spine, ribs, and breath. These fundamental components of our torso movements, encoded in our gait, allow us to restore lost function and reduce the risks of future musculoskeletal issues.

Some of our most robust habits, behaviors, and dysfunctional movement patterns reside within the torso. We need to become aware of their presence. This change requires looking closely and carefully at ourselves to recognize which behaviors and movement patterns carry us forward and which hold us back.

In this module, you discover that the fundamental pattern of walking exists within every layer of spinal movement. Spinal vertebrae vary in their form and functional contribution to walking. Whole-body integration allows the nervous system to choose healthy gait patterns freely.

We will also compare your definition of your body's midline to your brain's interpretation of the midline. This process demonstrates that we can strongly influence the nervous system to choose efficient and effective torso movement patterns, supporting the availability and quality of spontaneous weight shifts demonstrated by the organic change or the relocation of our center of mass. These are foundational in walking.

Through immersion in experiential learning, you will realize how the breath, pelvic girdle, and shoulder girdle synergistically and biomechanically impact the torso and rib joints. Subjective partners of power and ease begin to arise within your walking gait.

Throughout the modules of Walk in Power, Walk in Ease, we increase our potential to better care for ourselves as we age and discover more possibilities throughout our lifespan. We begin to change what we thought we could never change.

MODULE 3

The Neurobiology of Connections: Arms, Neck, Jaw, and Eyes

Your walking gait impacts everything you do, from bathing, styling your hair, and toileting to completing household tasks, playing sports, and enjoying recreational activities.

When we recognize the difference between efficient versus effective walking, we reshape our growth mindset and assumptions. In this module, we awaken the awareness of how our arms, neck, jaw, and eyes collaborate to strongly influence the nervous system's basic operations to transform our walking gait.

We aren't trying to change behavior by inserting a new behavior. Directed experiential movement experiences will engage our neurological system in a non-threatening, low-risk environment to influence efficient feedback loops. These feedback loops will produce positive adaptations in the musculoskeletal system. Consistent and novel repetition of these movements will restore a more accurate path of neuroplasticity.

When we increase our self-awareness of the fundamental movement patterns in the neck-head complex, we understand how the nervous system quickly makes decisions based on safety, protection, and musculoskeletal efficiency.

Clinician's Corner

"The Gait class awakened 'somatic' blind spot areas, especially in my left hip and ribcage. I also absolutely loved moving my trochanter over my hip joint - in such a novel, simple, straightforward way that completely changed my Gait and weight-bearing. What is not to love about this class? So well taught! So organized! Communication was excellent, and great course material and bonus videos."

~Wendy Madgwick, PT~

There are few learning environments where one can feel so safe to ask questions. The environment is phenomenal. Overall, this is one of the best courses I have taken and has added a framework for the somatic knowledge I have studied and have been studying. This framework you offered is like the skeleton in a body of knowledge for me. Thanks so very much!
~ Dawne Roy, M.Ed., GCFP ~

In each of the 3 Modules, you will ...
Discover how to determine your competency in movement.

Engage in experiences that create awareness of your body’s movements.
Learn how your nervous system operates, directs, and determines how you walk.

Understand the unconscious way your nervous system organizes your head over your pelvis (center of mass) and your feet (base of support) to keep you balanced and from falling.

Each module is a stand-alone class that offers information and knowledge integrated through experiential somatic platforms such as the Feldenkrais Method, Bones for Life, and Functional Somatic Mobilization. Take one module, or for a better experience toward improving your pattern of walking, register for all three of these live online courses. This series will take you beyond the traditional way of learning and studying the mechanics of how we walk. It will transform your self-care, health, wellness, and rehabilitation.

FAQ
  • How is this course different from Gait for Wild Human Potential?
Not just a new name, Walk in Power - Walk in Ease, we also changed the format of the class. Three modules, each 10 hours, are delivered in 2-hour increments for five weeks.

This format allows the participant time to digest and integrate the cognitive and experiential learning needed to engage our nervous system in a non-threatening, low-risk environment to influence efficient feedback loops. These feedback loops in the nervous system will produce positive adaptations in the musculoskeletal system.

Consistent and novel repetition of these movements will restore a more accurate path of neuroplasticity. We aren't trying to change behavior by inserting a new behavior.

We also expanded the hours of the course from 20 to 30. AND after reviewing the last 13 years of our movement explorations, we selected the best of these explorations (and added some new ones) to deepen your understanding of how to experience an organized single-leg stance skillfully and powerfully.

These movement explorations successfully carry over into more challenging tasks that require a smaller base of support, like walking, turning, reaching, and climbing, as well as potentially improving your overall well-being.
